A genuine 1876 cottage in the heart of Hunter Valley, two ceremony gardens, and nineteen guest rooms a short walk from the door. That’s Circa 1876, the headline reception space at The Convent Hunter Valley in Pokolbin, also known as Circa 1876 Restaurant, The Convent Hunter Valley.
Its two addresses sit about 200 metres apart down a tree-lined driveway: Circa 1876 at 64 Halls Road, and the wider Convent estate at 88 Halls Road.
A circa 1876 wedding suits a couple who wants real history instead of a styled version of it, and who doesn’t mind that the room is also a working restaurant most nights of the week. We’ve photographed weddings at Circa 1876, so this guide includes where we shoot portraits and how the light behaves here. Learn more about our Hunter Valley wedding photography.

Ceremony spaces
Circa 1876 Gardens (60 seated)
Circa 1876 Gardens seats 60, the only ceremony space that takes a full guest list. Mature trees shade the lawn, with the 1876 homestead behind you and the restaurant itself in view as you say your vows.
The Convent Fountain (25 seated)
The Convent Fountain seats 25 in a formal garden facing the Convent’s timber facade, so the backdrop is the building itself. At that size, it suits an elopement or a micro-wedding on its own terms, more than a smaller version of the Gardens.
A wet-weather backup is included with every ceremony, though where each space moves to and who calls it isn’t published. Confirm the specifics for your date before you book.
Reception spaces
Circa 1876 + Champagne Lounge (150 cocktail / 120 seated)
Circa 1876, the historic cottage that gives the venue its name, holds the main reception: 150 standing for a cocktail-style event or 120 seated. It’s a genuinely old room, built in 1876, with chandeliers, exposed timber beams, and the kind of character that doesn’t need much dressing up; those beams double as a hanging point for florals.
The adjoining Champagne Lounge, with its own open fireplace, works as a pre-dinner spot or somewhere the bridal party can gather before being announced.
Circa 1876 Alfresco (40 seated)
Circa 1876 Alfresco is the smaller option: an enclosed outdoor space over the vineyard rows and the restaurant’s own kitchen garden, built to work regardless of season. It seats forty, so it works as a small wedding venue in the Hunter Valley in its own right.
What a Circa 1876 wedding costs
There’s one wedding package, the Heritage package, built for up to 150 guests with a minimum spend standing in for a per-head floor.
It covers a two-course seasonal menu, or a cocktail-style menu instead, plus a five-hour beverage package. Table settings, linen, and full service come with it, along with a tasting lunch for the couple beforehand and the basics for speeches: a cake table and a gift table.
Two things to consider: the included Classic beverage list runs on Tyrrell’s wines; upgrading to Signature moves it to Pepper Tree. And a Sunday or Monday wedding carries an additional charge because the restaurant is closed to the public those two days, so you get the entire location for yourself.
Beyond that, extras add up as usual: vendor meals, billed separately and differently again for crew, children and teenagers, grazing tables, extended hours, welcome dinners, recovery breakfasts, in-room catering, and full-weekend lists.
No per-head figure is published anywhere. Pricing is quoted per wedding, so the only way to an accurate number is requesting the current wedding kit and confirming the minimum spend for your date.
Photographer’s wedding venue notes
Best shooting spots
The estate’s 19 rooms sit in the relocated 1909 convent building, and several keep their original charm. One was the chapel, another the library. Two more served as the old music room and kindergarten. French doors open onto wide verandahs, with a drawing room downstairs, about 200 metres from the restaurant, close enough for a buggy ride.
The Gardens take the most planning on our side. The tree cover keeps the lawn shaded while the sky behind it stays bright, so it’s worth walking the space late in the afternoon before the ceremony to work out where the group shot goes — it’s the one open space on the estate that holds everyone at once.
The Convent Fountain faces the Convent’s two-storey timber facade, so the backdrop is the building itself rather than garden. It doubles as a formal portrait spot for weddings held elsewhere on the estate.
Chickens and beehives share the kitchen garden and vineyard rows that supply the restaurant’s kitchen, where you can watch the last of the day’s light fade over the kitchen garden from the dining room.
Once the sun’s down, the cottage interior is where the day moves indoors, creating close, warm frames instead of chasing fading light outside.
The outdoor dancefloor is the only after-dark space on the estate, used once the sun’s properly down.
Lighting notes
The general rule for every open-air spot on this estate is the same: late afternoon gives the softest light. The window runs shorter than most couples expect though: roughly 30 to 40 minutes, and shorter again once you’re behind a tree line.
In December and January, the window doesn’t start until about 7:25 to 7:30pm, so a midsummer couple who wants those photos needs to step out from their own dinner for fifteen minutes. In June and July, the light’s gone by about 5:25pm, so a 4pm ceremony leaves enough of it for portraits, and a 4:30pm one doesn’t.
Indoors is a different story: the cottage interior carries the day once the light’s gone, which makes winter a reasonable season to book here.
What makes Circa 1876 unique
The Convent building isn’t a replica: it’s a real 1909 convent that stood in Coonamble, nearly 600 kilometres west, where it ran as a boarding school until 1980. Facing demolition, it was dismantled piece by piece, every piece numbered and photographed, trucked to Pokolbin on low loaders, with engineers rebuilding bridges along the route to get the largest sections through. It reopened on this site in 1991.
The kitchen carries its own credibility too: Circa 1876 is led by chef Anthony Fullerton, NSW Chef of the Year 2026, and the restaurant holds an Australian Good Food Guide Chef’s Hat for both 2024 and 2025.
Wedding day challenges and tips
Sixty seated at the Gardens, 120 in the cottage, so a guest list that falls between the two needs a conversation before any deposit goes down. It’s the first thing worth raising at the site visit.
The outdoor dancefloor is dim enough that we usually bring our own light for it, a kit note more than a real problem. Circa 1876 trades Tuesday to Saturday, dinner from 5:30pm, closed Sunday and Monday, so access to the interior before service depends on the day you’ve booked.

Similar and nearby venues
If Circa 1876 isn’t quite the fit, a few other Pokolbin venues are worth a look, all within about ten minutes and on a similar all-inclusive pricing model.

Peppers Creek Barrel Room
Peppers Creek Barrel Room and Chapel seats up to 180, where Circa 1876 stops at 150, and adds a rustic sandstone chapel plus three self-contained cottages sleeping 26 as a group booking.

White Barn
White Barn offers a similar rate and capacity, but it’s a private boutique estate you have entirely to yourselves, with its own chapel seating 100, a separate barn, and midweek weddings down to 40 guests.

Peterson House
Peterson House scales further still, up to 300 guests across a purpose-built sandstone chapel and marquee, for a guest list that’s outgrown a heritage cottage.
Ready to plan your Hunter Valley wedding?
Circa 1876 suits a couple who wants history, and somewhere intimate on-site for the wedding party to sleep. The whole day happens on one estate, and the building itself is doing most of the work before a single flower goes up.
It isn’t the fit if you want a venue that’s exclusively yours every day of the week. Circa 1876 is a working restaurant open to the public most nights, so the day runs to the restaurant’s own rhythm. It isn’t the fit for a 150-guest sit-down dinner either; the cottage tops out at 120 seated. And Sunday or Monday will cost more, not less, if you’re hoping for a discount outside the weekend.
